In the southwest of the Lower Austrian town of Haag, Salaberg Castle presents itself with a silhouette, shaped by three interconnected courtyards and towers. Its architectural diversity ranges from medieval origins to Baroque extensions.

History+

The first documented mention of the complex, then a castle, dates back to 1282. In 1530, the merchant Niclas Kölnbeck from Steyr acquired the castle and had it converted into a Renaissance palace with an arcaded courtyard. In 1618, the castle passed into the possession of the Counts of Salburg, whose descendants own it to this day. Under Georg Siegmund Graf Salburg and his son Franz Ferdinand Graf Salburg, a military figure, the castle acquired its current appearance. Around 1640, the central courtyard was added, featuring three two-story wings and two flanking towers. The outer economic courtyard was built around 1700, originating from the construction of the castle chapel.
