In the Swiss municipality of Salenstein stands Salenstein Castle, a historic structure. Originally built in the 11th century, it is characterized by later renovations in the English Neo-Gothic style.

History+

The origins of Salenstein Castle date back to the 11th century. In 1092, the Lords of Salenstein, who served as ministerials of Reichenau Abbey, were first mentioned in documents. In 1375, the castle was sold. In the subsequent 700 years, the property frequently changed hands and underwent numerous alterations and expansions. A renovation took place in 1869 under Baron Alexander von Herder, a grandson of Johann Gottfried Herder, who gave the castle its English Neo-Gothic character.
