Salzhof Castle

Even before the city's founding around 1220, a castle existed on this site, serving as a princely residence and administrative hub. After Duke Rudolf IV began constructing a new castle from 1363, the original castle lost its significance and was used as a granary and stables from 1395. In the 16th century, particularly from 1563 when the salt trade passed into Habsburg hands, the building became established as a salt storage facility and acquired its current name, Salzhof. A fire in 1815 damaged the tower, which was not rebuilt.
