Sayn Castle

The origins of Sayn Castle date back to the 14th century, when a knight's manor was built for the Lords of Reiffenberg. The Counts of Sayn, whose ancestral seat was Sayn Castle located above, bequeathed their possessions in 1247 to the Counts of Sponheim, who subsequently called themselves Sayn-Wittgenstein. After another division and reunification of the counties in the 17th century, the Sayn-Sayn line died out, and the inheritance was again divided. In 1848, Prince Ludwig Adolph Friedrich zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Ludwigsburg returned from Russia. He received Sayn Castle as a gift from the Prussian king and acquired the manor house located at the foot of the castle hill.
