Schafisheim Castle

The construction of Schafisheim Castle dates back to the period after the Battle of Sempach in 1386. The Lords of Baldegg, whose ancestral seat had been destroyed during the war, commissioned the building of this new residence. The exact year of construction is unknown, but the castle's first documented mention dates to 1474. It served as the domicile for the holders of the Schafisheim judicial lordship, which belonged to the Bernese subject territory. In 1482, the Baldegg family, facing financial difficulties, sold the castle and the judicial lordship to the Hallwyler family. After the extinction of the Schafisheim line of the Hallwylers, the Bernese transferred ownership in 1736 to the brothers Samuel and Etienne Brutel, descendants of French Huguenots. In 1802, the castle became the property of the municipality of Schafisheim. After several changes of ownership, the Baumann family acquired the estate in 1845, and their descendants still inhabit it today.
