Schambach Castle

The first mentions of a castle in Schambach date back to around 800 AD, likely a wooden manor house at that time. The current castle was built in the Middle Ages as a brick structure in the Old Gothic style, erected on oak piles and surrounded by a moat, which was originally much larger than it is today. A drawbridge secured access. To the west, two hexagonal towers flanked the building, while a watchtower at the eastern entrance was replaced by an extension as early as 1318. Around 1550, under the Trenbach family, it was converted into a two-winged complex, integrating old building components. After the Thirty Years' War, ownership briefly passed to St. Emmeram Abbey before returning to private hands.
