In the municipality of Scharnstein in Upper Austria, Schloss Scharnstein is a historic building above the left bank of the Alm river. Originally built as an administrative house, it evolved into a Renaissance castle and now houses a museum.

History+

The castle's origins date back to 1538 when, after a fire at Scharnstein Castle, construction of a new administrative house began. This location, known as "Schafferleithen," served as the seat for the manorial administrator. In 1584, Helmhard von Jörger, president of the imperial court chamber, acquired the dominion of Scharnstein as his free property and began building a new castle, later named "Neuscharnstein." Under his son Georg Wilhelm, the Renaissance structure was completed around 1606. The painted wooden ceilings featured the alliance coat of arms of the Jörger and Polheim von Parz families.
