In Fürstenau in the Swiss canton of Graubünden stands Schauenstein Castle, often referred to as the “Upper Castle.” Together with the Episcopal Castle, it forms a significant part of the former medieval defensive complex and is now a restaurant and hotel.

History+

The origin of Schauenstein Castle lies in a medieval defensive tower, which formed the eastern end of an old fortification. Around 1670, Rudolf and Johann Rudolf von Schauenstein acquired the dilapidated building from the Bishop of Chur and integrated it into a new construction. The castle's current appearance largely dates back to this expansion, as evidenced by the year 1667 and the coats of arms of the builders Johann Rudolf and Emilie von Molina on the portal of the west wing.
