Scheibbs Castle

Scheibbs Castle, an edifice in Scheibbs, Lower Austria, is a striking example of Mostviertel architecture. It is within an ensemble of the town parish church, town wall, and rectory, and today serves as the seat of local authorities.
History+
The origins of Scheibbs Castle likely trace back to an early medieval castle-church complex. This was probably erected by the ancestors of the Counts of Peilstein at a point in the Erlauftal valley and evolved into a central component of Scheibbs' fortifications. In 1338, Duke Albert II gifted the market town of Scheibbs to the Carthusian monastery of Gaming. Consequently, Scheibbs became the secular administrative center of the monastic lordship, and the castle assumed the role of its administrative seat. Following the dissolution of the Gaming Charterhouse in 1782, the castle changed hands multiple times, including ownership by the imperial state property administration, Ignaz Müller, Wenzel Joseph Ritter von Sallaba, Johann Heinrich Freiherr von Sallaba, and Andreas Töpper. Later, it passed to Amalia Horst, Edard Musil, and Fritz Hamburger. Since 1954, the castle has been owned by the Province of Lower Austria.
