Scheibenhardt Castle
Hofgut Scheibenhardt or Scheibenhardt Castle is a former hunting lodge on the southwestern edge of Karlsruhe.
The castle was expanded into a hunting lodge starting in 1698 under Franziska Sibylla Augusta by Domenico Egidio Rossi, Johann Michael Ludwig Rohrer, and Franz Ignaz Kromer. It is a three-story building with a central hall connected to a garden by outdoor staircases. During the war against France (1701–1714), Scheibenhardt was integrated into the defense lines. It is surrounded by a low circular rampart and moat.
Under Margrave Ludwig Georg, Scheibenhardt was extensively modernized in 1754. The central hall received painted wallpaper featuring images of native and exotic birds. Court painter Heinrich Lihl was commissioned for the design.
The site was first mentioned in 1150, and in 1501 it came into Baden possession. In 1926, the district became part of Bulach and thus, in 1929, part of Karlsruhe.
Today, the castle houses studios of the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, and the surrounding grounds feature a golf course.
