Schellenberg Castle

The origins of Schellenberg Castle date back to the 12th century, when it was first documented and owned by the noble lords of Broich. At the end of the 13th century, it passed to the Lords of der Horst, who still referred to it as “Haus opm berge”. In 1353, Knight Noldo von Kückelsheim acquired the castle. Through marriage, it came into the possession of Pilgrim von Leithen in 1388 and finally to Johann von Vittinghoff-Schell in 1452, whose family gave the castle its current name. The Vittinghoff-Schells inhabited the complex until 1909.
