Schenkenstein Castle in Röckingen, a district of Ansbach in Bavaria, is a building erected on the foundations of a medieval motte-and-bailey castle. It was extended around 1550 and still houses a Renaissance stepped gable and the coat of arms of the Schenken von Schenkenstein above the archway.

History+

The origins of Schenkenstein Castle date back to the Middle Ages, when it served as a motte-and-bailey castle. In 1468, Hans von Seckendorff transferred his share of Röckingen as a fief to Margrave Albrecht von Ansbach, who in turn passed it on to Hans von Schenkenstein. The last representative of the Schenkenstein family, together with his stepbrother Georg von Gundelsheim, had the old castle expanded into the still-existing castle around 1550. In 1572, the last Schenkenstein murdered his wife Cäcilie von Rechenberg in the castle.
