Schieferegg Castle

The first documented mention of Schieferegg dates back to 1361, when it was referred to as the seat of the Enns citizen Berthold Scheffolt von Scheffoltsegk. At the end of the 14th century, the Habichler family took possession. Friedrich Habichler sold the noble seat in 1409 to Wolf Feuchter, whose family held the fief until 1520. Around 1460, Heinrich von Geumann was the owner. In 1466, the castle was captured by citizens from Steyr, as Knight Ortolph Geymann had entrenched himself there. In 1485, Hungarian troops occupied the castle during the war against Emperor Frederick III and burned it down upon their withdrawal. Reconstruction took place after 1490, and its appearance still corresponds to the depiction in Vischer's Topography from 1674. After the Feuchters, Siegmund von Polheim and Wolfgang von Volkenstorff followed as owners. In 1628, Schieferegg passed to Count Werner t’Serclaes von Tilly. In 1730, Maria Anna Catharina Countess Montfort sold the estate to Johann Joseph Antonius Baron von und zu Weichs, who had to declare bankruptcy in 1750. From 1756, Schieferegg was no longer managed as a noble seat. Later, the feudal sovereignty over Schieferegg passed to the lordship of Gleink and from 1764 to St. Florian Abbey. In the 19th century, the castle changed hands several times, including Anna Maria Hoislbauer and Johann Lindner. Under Franz Trunk, a later owner, the castle was renovated. Today, it is owned by the Prtak family.
