Schillingsfürst Castle

The first documented mention of Schillingsfürst occurred in the year 1000 in an imperial charter. A noble family, who named themselves after the place, resided here from 1156 to 1261. Around 1260, the castle passed to the Hohenlohe family, whose ownership is traceable from 1313. In 1316, the castle was captured and burned down by Louis the Bavarian after a siege. Following a period of decline and frequent changes of ownership, Schillingsfürst was reacquired by the Hohenlohe family in 1424 and taken as a fief of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg in 1444. During the German Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was again plundered and burned down. Subsequently, it was rebuilt, with the master builder Heinrich Schickhardt also involved. In the Thirty Years' War, the castle was occupied by imperial troops in 1632 after the Counts of Hohenlohe had sided with the Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus.
