On the eastern edge of the village of Schkopau in Saxony-Anhalt lies Schkopau Castle. Originally built as a Carolingian fortification, it now houses a hotel.

History+

The origins of Schkopau Castle presumably date back to the 9th century, when it was erected as a Carolingian fortification. In the 12th century, it was expanded into Scapowe Castle. The first documented mention dates to 1215, when Emperor Frederick II transferred the imperial castle to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg. In 1444, the property passed to the Bishop of Merseburg, before coming into the possession of the von Trotha family in 1477.
