Schmarsow Castle

The village of Schmarsow, first mentioned in 1249, was originally a fief of the Maltzahn family and belonged to the possessions of the nearby Osten Castle. In 1599, Schmarsow was part of the Vanselow estate complex, with an estate already existing in the village at that time. Between 1674 and 1695, Philipp Joachim von Parsenow acquired all the Osten estates, including Schmarsow. He had the current manor house built at the end of the 17th century on the site of a previous building, using material from Osten Castle, which had been destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. In 1796, the building was restored by Otto Bogislav von Parsenow. After the Parsenows died out in the 19th century, lengthy inheritance disputes arose, which were only settled in 1844 in favor of the Kummerow line of the Maltzahns.
