Schmerwitz Castle

The construction of Schloss Schmerwitz dates back to 1736, when Carl Friedrich Brandt von Lindau commissioned the building of a three-winged castle. Between 1871 and 1873, the estate was expanded, with neo-baroque elements added. A fire in 1892 led to the loss of the south wing. The facade decoration on the rear of the castle was created in the early 20th century. After 1945, the then owners were expropriated and expelled by the communists. The castle subsequently served as a training center for the Soviet Army and was altered through renovations and extensions until the 1980s, which did not always adhere to the original architecture.
