In the municipality of Schönau an der Triesting, Lower Austria, lies Schloss Schönau. Its history dates back to the 11th century, when it served as a fortress to protect Bavarian settlers. Only a few remnants of the original structure remain.

The origins of Schloss Schönau trace back to the 11th century, when it was built as a fortress to protect Bavarian settlers. During the Second Ottoman Siege in 1683, the then moated castle offered refuge to the surrounding population. The current building was constructed after 1796 under Baron Peter von Braun, one of Austria's wealthiest men at the time. He had the first gas lighting in Austria installed in the castle and created a park around the Temple of Night. The estate changed hands multiple times, including Johann von Liechtenstein and Archduke Otto of Austria.
