Schönberg Castle

The first documented mention of Schönberg Castle, then a moated castle, dates back to 1261. It served as the new ancestral seat for Albert von Schönberg, a scion of the Neuberg noble family. In 1343, the property passed into the possession of Knight Eitel Toss. During the 14th and early 15th centuries, the Lords of Kospod owned the Schönberg manor. It also briefly belonged to Hans von Rabe and Heinrich von Röder. From the mid-15th century, the von Zedtwitz family, including Sittich von Zedtwitz, took ownership of the castle, before it passed to the Barons von Reitzenstein after 1485, remaining in their possession for 460 years. In 1685, a three-story manor house with a five-axis facade and a flat brick hipped roof was built around the octagonal watchtower from 1485.
