Southeast of Göllersdorf in Lower Austria lies Schloss Schönborn. The three-winged layout and park make it an example of early 18th-century architecture.

History+

Schloss Schönborn was built between 1712 and 1717 as a summer residence for Friedrich Graf von Schönborn, a prince-bishop and imperial vice-chancellor. The Veste Mihlberg previously stood on this site. The design came from Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, who created a complex with an orangery and a chapel. In 1715, frescoes by Jonas Drentwett were added to an orangery pavilion. A St. John of Nepomuk Chapel in the castle park followed between 1729 and 1733, also based on Hildebrandt's plans. In 1945, the castle partly served as a military hospital. After looting, the building was restored.
