Schönborn Castle

Schloss Schönborn (formerly Stockheimer Hof) is a Renaissance noble court from the mid-16th century in Geisenheim in the Rheingau.

Hermann von Stockheim, who came from a noble Geisenheim family, had the court built in 1550. Philipp Erwein von Schönborn, the brother of the Mainz Archbishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn, acquired the estate in 1652, which is still owned by the Counts of Schönborn-Wiesentheid.

The building is a typical example of the open manor house type found in the Middle Rhine and Main regions, which transitioned from late Gothic form into the Renaissance. The Stockheim family owned other courts of a similar type in Eltville am Rhein (today the seat of the Langwerth von Simmern winery) and the Stockheimer Hof in Idstein.

The current state of the property is essentially due to alterations from the 19th century: In 1875, the Frankfurt architect Heinrich Theodor Schmidt added two half-timbered upper floors in historicizing Renaissance form to the stone building.
