In Hofgeismar, Schloss Schönburg, once known as Montcherie, is an example of early Classicist architecture. It rises on an artificially created hill in Gesundbrunnen Park and once served as a summer residence for Landgrave Wilhelm IX.

History+

The construction of the castle took place between 1787 and 1790 under the direction of Simon Louis du Ry. It was commissioned by Landgrave Wilhelm IX, later Elector Wilhelm I of Hesse-Kassel, in the then Bad Gesundbrunnen near Hofgeismar. Originally intended as the Landgrave's summer residence, it received its current name Schönburg in 1795, which commemorates the nearby Schöneberg castle ruin.
