Schöndorf Castle

The origins of Schöndorf lie in the 12th century, when vassals of the Regau counts settled here. In 1135, Wezilo von Schöndorf transferred his property in Wagrain to the Prince-Provostry of Berchtesgaden. Later, in 1301, Friedrich von Schöndorf acquired a Mondsee fiefdom at Lake Attersee. The Perkheimer family named themselves after the Schöndorf seat in 1373. The feudal lordship was divided between the Habsburg sovereign and the Paiss zu Mitterberg, whose rights passed to the Fronhofer zu Walkering in 1550. After further sales, David Engl zu Wagrain acquired the entire property in 1602, which remained in family ownership until 1848.
