Schönebeck Castle
Schönebeck Castle is a picturesque moated castle, located in Bremen-Schönebeck in the valley of the Schönebecker Aue. It impresses with its North German half-timbered architecture and today houses a local history museum that brings regional history to life.
History+
The exact period of construction of Schönebeck Castle is not fully clarified, but it is believed to have been built in the 17th century by Junker Franz Wilken von Schönebeck. After his death in 1661, the noble line died out. In 1662, Baron Jacob von Schlebusch acquired the heavily indebted estate. An attempt by the city of Bremen in 1677 to purchase the castle failed due to the resistance of the Swedish government, on whose territory it was located. In 1682, the castle came into the possession of the nobleman Friedrich von der Borch, who had the southwest side renovated in 1705. A stone tablet documents these works. After the castle remained unused for decades and threatened to fall into disrepair, the city of Bremen bought it in 1952. It was restored and made available to the Museum Association for Vegesack.
