Schönefeld Castle

An outwork in Schönefeld existed as early as 1497. From 1551, it was referred to as a manor. The estate was owned by the von Thümmel family from the mid-16th to the mid-18th century. In 1701, the castle was built and destroyed in the Napoleonic Wars of 1813. From 1815 to 1849, the castle was owned by Marianne Wilhelmine Rosine Elisabeth von Eberstein. From 1871 to 1876, the castle was rebuilt. In 1900, Clara Hedwig von Eberstein established the Eberstein'sche Mariannenstift in the castle for unmarried, Christian daughters of officers and nobility. In 1946, the foundation was expropriated by the communists. It was used as a retirement home and a home for disabled children.

Since 1994, the castle has housed a special needs school for severely and multiply disabled children and adolescents.
