Schönfeld Castle

The history of Schloss Schönfeld begins with a moated castle in the 11th century, from which the Schönfeld manor developed. By 1535, this encompassed surrounding villages. In 1568, Georg Cracow, an advisor to the Saxon Elector August, acquired the manor. Under his patronage, the current Renaissance castle was built in 1573/74, its entrance portal adorned with the coat of arms of Cracow and his wife Sara Bugenhagen. However, Cracow fell from grace in 1572 and died from the consequences of torture, forcing his heirs to sell the castle. Over the next two centuries, the property changed hands multiple times, including families such as the von Loss and von Friesen.
