Schönfeld Castle

The first documented mention of Schönfeld as a feudal lordship occurred in 1216, when Tammo de Sconevelt was named as a witness. The Schönfeld family owned the noble seat until the early 15th century. Around 1350, the site was besieged by the mercenaries of the Lusatian League of Six Towns. After the Schönfeld line died out in 1421, the lordship was divided and later passed to the von der Sahla family. They had the current castle complex built between 1560 and 1590 in the style of the Saxon Renaissance. In 1765, Carl Friedrich von Erdmannsdorf married into the family, and the Erdmannsdorffs became the new lords.
