Schönhagen Castle

The origins of the Schönhagen manor date back to 1711, when it separated from the Olpenis manor. From 1712 to 1754, it was owned by the proprietors of the Loitmark manor and functioned as its outfarm. At the beginning of this period, in 1712, Schönhagen belonged to Colonel Joachim Dietrich von Dewitz. In the following decades, ownership changed frequently. In the mid-19th century, around 1840, the estate covered an area of almost 2,500 acres and housed 64 families with a total of 310 inhabitants. It also included the village of Höxmark, half of Brodersby, as well as Nordhagen and Kiekut. During the Schleswig-Holstein Uprising from 1848 to 1851, the estate, along with Carlsburg and Wittmark, participated in the popular armament. The then lord of the manor, Paul Paulsen Henningsen, spoke out in favor of the “Insurrection Government” in the assembly of estates in April 1848 and advocated for Schleswig's incorporation into Germany.
