Schönleiten Castle

The origins of the estate date back to 1645, when the Salzburg advocate Andreas Weikh and his wife Maria Wiserin began acquiring several farms in Liefering. In 1655, the property passed to the Salzburg canons Johann Dietrich and Karl Ferdinand, Counts of Muggental. They had the existing buildings demolished and erected a castle in their place, surrounded by a two-meter-high wall with gates facing the city and the village. After Johann Dietrich's death in 1678, his brother Karl Ferdinand sold the property to the Salzburg regional government, from where it went to Archbishop Max Gandolf von Kuenburg. Through an exchange, Schloss Schönleiten eventually came into the possession of the cathedral chapter, with its use granted to the respective dean. In 1752, the four corner towers of the castle were removed due to dilapidation.
