Schorndorf Castle, an example of a Renaissance fortress, stands on the edge of Schorndorf's old town. It once served as a cornerstone of the duchy's strongest city fortress.

History+

The construction of Schorndorf Castle began in 1538 under Duke Ulrich, likely on the site of an older moated castle. It was conceived as one of the state fortresses protecting the duchy and formed a central part of the city fortress of Schorndorf, which in the 16th century was considered the most powerful of its kind in the duchy. The castle survived the fire of 1634, which destroyed almost the entire city.
