Schrattenthal Castle

The origins of Schloss Schrattenthal date back to the 13th century, when a defensive structure at this location was first documented in 1220. In 1435, a new late Gothic moated castle was erected, serving as part of the medieval town fortifications. Between 1660 and 1719, the complex underwent extensive Baroque transformation, and in the 19th century, several renovations gave the castle its current appearance. The castle's history is marked by changing owners and served as an important stronghold for the Protestant estates during the Reformation. During the Thirty Years' War, it was used as a headquarters by the Swedes. Later, in the 20th century, the castle briefly served as a Russian military hospital.

Schloss Schrattenthal is located at approximately 255 meters above sea level in the municipality of Schrattenthal, in the Hollabrunn district, Lower Austria, Austria.

Today, Schloss Schrattenthal is privately owned. The approximately 4.5-hectare complex is accessible and can be visited. In addition to the castle itself, it includes an outer bailey, a castle park, various residential and commercial buildings, and the castle chapel. The complex has been undergoing restoration since 1986, with the buildings in the outer castle courtyard mostly housing apartments.
