Schloss Schwanenburg, the second Menzingen manor, was built in 1569 on the walls of an old castle.

From Medieval Fortress to Renaissance Palace

The history of Schloss Schwanenburg dates back to the Middle Ages. The original castle, of which only a few remnants of the foundation walls are preserved today, was probably built in the 12th century. It served to protect the strategically important trade routes and the nearby settlement.

In the 16th century, the castle lost its military significance and was acquired by the noble Menzingen family. They decided to demolish the dilapidated medieval fortress and build a representative Renaissance palace on its foundations. The construction work began in 1569 and was completed within a few years.
