Schwarzenberg Castle, which emerged from a medieval fortification, shapes the cityscape of Schwarzenberg in the Saxon Ore Mountains district, along with St. George's Church. It is an example of the development of a defensive structure into a hunting lodge.

History+

The origins of Schwarzenberg Castle likely date back to the 12th century, when it was founded as a defensive structure. Between 1555 and 1558, extensive renovations transformed the complex into an electoral Saxon hunting lodge, giving it its current appearance. From 1851 to 1852, the keep and the south wing were raised, and in 1875/76, an administrative building was added. The lower part of the keep represents the oldest preserved component of the complex, dating back to the 12th century.
