Schwarzenburg Castle (Wahlern)
In the municipality of Wahlern in the Swiss canton of Bern, Schwarzenburg Castle is a 16th-century edifice. It has served as a local administrative center for over four centuries.
History+
The dominion of Grasburg, which included the area of the later castle, was sold by the Counts of Savoy to the cities of Bern and Fribourg in Üechtland in 1423. As the original castle was remote, the new owners decided to construct a castle in the village of Schwarzenburg between 1573 and 1575. This structure subsequently served as the official residence for the Vogt, who was alternately appointed by Bern and Fribourg. In 1798, the previously jointly administered dominion passed entirely into the possession of Bern.

Today, Schwarzenburg Castle houses the Schwarzenburg district administration. The building has largely retained its original facade and basic structure.
