Schwarzenfeld Castle

The origins of Schloss Schwarzenfeld date back to the 14th century, with its first mention in 1372 when Conrad Pullenhofer had it built. It later came into the possession of the Plankenfelser family, who expanded the building with four towers in the 15th century. However, these towers were destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and never rebuilt. A fire in 1707 destroyed the castle and surrounding buildings, leading to a new construction on a different site, characterized by stepped gables. In the early 19th century, the main building acquired its current appearance through the removal of the stepped gables and the introduction of a hip roof, along with two small onion-domed towers. From 1794, the castle belonged to the Counts of Holnstein, particularly Count Maximilian Karl Theodor von Holnstein, a confidant of King Ludwig II, who resided there from 1857. Between 1890 and 1892, he commissioned Julius Hofmann to undertake an expansion in the Historicist style.
