Schwarzenstein Castle
Schwarzenstein Castle is located near Geisenheim below the Johannisberg district of Schlosheide on the road to Stephanshausen. It was built as a historicizing artificial ruin, which was quite common in the 19th century.
In 1873, the Frankfurt architect F. Schädel, commissioned by the wine merchant and banker Peter Arnold Mumm (House G. H. Mumm), built an artificial castle ruin with a park. (as documentation of their elevation in status)
In 1957, Rudolf-August Oetker took over the estate with its winery and converted the castle into a restaurant. In 1986, it was leased by Georg and Magdalena Stark, then bought and expanded around 1989 with a small hotel.
In 2004, the castle found a new owner, who invested a significant sum to carry out a fundamental modernization. In the process, the restaurant and the hotel were also expanded. Today, the castle presents itself with a Mediterranean flair. The hotel is now owned by a family foundation.
Current Use+
The estate, situated high above the Rhine Valley with views from Wiesbaden to Rüdesheim, serves as a hotel and restaurant for upscale gastronomy. Since March 1, 2010, Schwarzenstein Castle has 39 room units and 5 conference rooms.
Schwarzenstein Castle was admitted to the Relais & Châteaux group in 2007. Schwarzenstein Castle has 2 restaurants, a regional castle restaurant and the gourmet restaurant Schwarzenstein (1 * Guide Michelin / 17 Gault-Millau points).
