Schwarzenstein Castle

Haus Schwarzenstein is a former knight's seat in the Drevenack district of Hünxe. The origins of the fortified house lie in the 14th century. A document from 1348 first proves the Schwarzenstein family.

After the von Ringenberg family, the Stecke family acquired the lordship in 1454. In 1468 to the Amelong and in 1544 to the Mumm family, who called themselves Mumm von Schwarzenstein. After the family on Schwarzenstein died out in 1713 and the extensive possessions were regulated by inheritance, Baron Johann Sigismund von Heiden bought the lordship in 1716. In 1729, Baron Johann Sigismund von Strünkede married into the manorial estate. In 1776, Schwarzenstein was sold from the bankruptcy estate of the Strünkede possessions to the widow Löhr in Wesel. This ended its eligibility for the Landtag.

In addition to the fortified house within the moat, the stable buildings, the brewery, the shepherd's cottage, the oven and the well were also included in the purchase. Furthermore, 158 acres 587 rods of land, along with several rights.

In 1849, the Protestant pastor Schneider from Wesel inherited Schwarzenstein, followed by his brother-in-law Jodocus Albertus Casparus Eichelberg.

In 1889/1890, the old building was demolished, and only the tower remained. The building that exists today was erected using the old foundations and vaults.

In the turmoil of war at the end of the Second World War, Schwarzenstein was plundered and its owner murdered. The subsequent owner left his property and in 1961 made the estate available to the Rhenish-Westphalian Drag Hunt Club for lease.
