Schwerstedt Castle is located in the municipality of Schwerstedt in the Weimarer Land region of Thuringia.

History+

Schwerstedt was first mentioned as “Suegerstete” before 802 in a goods register of the Imperial Abbey of Hersfeld. The name derives from the Old High German word “Sweigari” for swineherd. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the Lords of Schwerstedt were mentioned, who may have been the administrators of a moated castle. This castle, whose remains can be found in buildings and walls of the later manor, protected the passing Via Regia.
