Seeburg Castle

The origins of Seeburg Castle likely date back to before 1426, when it was built on the site of an older fortified structure. Ulrich von Dachsberg, who came from Aspach in the Innviertel, is mentioned in 1429 as the first lord of Seeburg and is considered its probable builder. The von Dachsberg family served the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg as officials and administrators. Heinrich von Dachsberg, a son of Ulrich, became court marshal in 1483. From 1508, his son Bernhard engaged in lengthy and sometimes violent feuds over hunting and jurisdictional rights with Virgil Graf von Überacker, which are even preserved in legends. After the childless death of Dietrich von Dachsberg in 1569, the lineage died out, and the castle passed to the von Haunsperg family. Around 1600, the land registry office was dissolved, and Seeburg subsequently served as a summer residence. In 1647, Adam Gottlieb Freiherr von Pranckh acquired the property. Under Ernst Maria Friedrich von Lodron in 1752, a comprehensive renovation in Rococo style took place, with the castle chapel being sumptuously expanded. His son Hieronimus Graf von Lodron was a patron of Mozart, who also visited here. After the loss of property during the Napoleonic Wars, Seeburg was auctioned off in 1825 and changed ownership several times. From 1850, it served as a home for needy seniors, later as a Hitler Youth headquarters, student dormitory, and kindergarten. Since 2007, it has housed a private university.

Seeburg Castle is located in the town of Seekirchen, in the Salzburg Umgebung district, in the federal state of Salzburg, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 525 m above sea level.

Today, Seeburg Castle houses a restaurant and is home to a private university. It is also a popular venue for civil and church weddings.
