Seedorf Castle

Seedorf Castle is the former manor house of the Seedorf estate on Lake Schaalsee.

The Seedorf estate was a noble estate in the Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg. Its early owner families included the noble families of Seedorf, von Brockdorff, Scharpenberg, and von Lützow. The Lützows sold Seedorf to the von Witzendorff family shortly after they had acquired the neighboring estate of Groß Zecher. Seedorf remained in the possession of the Witzendorffs until the end of the 19th century. With the death of District Administrator Ottokar von Witzendorff, Seedorf passed in 1890 to his widow, née Lindemann, who bequeathed it to her family after her death. From 1891–1893, the manor house, which still stands today in front of the Seedorfer Werder, was completely rebuilt in the Historicist style and thus displays the Neo-Renaissance formal language, which is rather untypical for Schleswig-Holstein. The associated agricultural operation was abandoned in 1972 and the lands were sold to the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
