Seggerde Castle

Seggerde Castle, also known as Seggerde Manor House, in Oebisfelde-Weferlingen (Börde district) in Saxony-Anhalt, was built from 1833 to 1838 by Werner Friedrich von Spiegel zu Peckelsheim in the Late Baroque style. The castle is located in the Seggerde district on the Aller river.

In 1224, a Siegfried von Seggerde is described, who probably served as the namesake. Two years later, Seggerde first appeared in the feudal register of Luthard von Meinersen. The former moated castle was acquired around 1616 by Statius von Münchhausen as a dowry for his daughter Engel, who married Arndt Spiegel zu Peckelsheim. Until 1892, the Seggerde knight's estate remained in the possession of the Spiegel family. This period also saw the reconstruction of the old moated castle, which was originally a simple fortification built for protection against the Slavs.

In 1828, Werner Friedrich von Spiegel zu Peckelsheim inherited the moated castle, among numerous other estates, to which he moved in 1830 after a short stay in Halberstadt. In 1833, he began to have the moated castle converted into a late Baroque three-wing complex. This period also saw the creation of the English landscape park with its two large lakes, as well as an orangery and a palm house. The moats that still surround the castle on three sides today are the last signs that a fortified moated castle once stood here.

Seggerde Castle, including the knight's estate and lands, was bequeathed by Werner Friedrich von Spiegel zu Peckelsheim's wife, who died in 1892, to the son of the aforementioned, to her brother-in-law, the chamberlain and retired district administrator Eduard von Davier.

In 1945, the von Davier family was forcibly dispossessed by the Soviet occupation forces. The castle subsequently served as a sanatorium for lung diseases, an apprentice dormitory, accommodation for border troops, and a nursery. Since reunification, the von Davier family has once again been the owner of the castle. The castle park is part of the "Garden Dreams Saxony-Anhalt" park network. Concerts occasionally take place in the castle.
