Silberegg Castle
Silberegg Castle is a listed building, erected at the beginning of the 15th century and renovated several times since, located in the village of the same name, which today belongs to the municipality of Kappel am Krappfeld in Carinthia.
Silberegg is a village southeast of Althofen, first documented in 1202 and 1285. Due to silver deposits, a settlement existed here as early as Roman times, as indicated by finds of building remains and numerous archaeological discoveries. In the Middle Ages, there was a castle here, documented in 1274 with Meinhalmus de Silbereke. Its location, however, can no longer be determined today.
The castle was built at the beginning of the 15th century and has been renovated several times since. Bernhard Khulmer zum Rosenbichl is often presumed to be the builder, but the first confirmed owner was a Hans von Silberegg, who died in 1543; his tombstone is in the parish church of St. George. His daughter married Sebastian von Schönaich, after which the castle passed into the possession of Hans Leonhard Freiherr von Windischgrätz. He had to sell it – presumably in the course of the Counter-Reformation – so that the property went in 1629 to Georg Siegmund von Althofen (Ambthofen), a mine owner from Mauterndorf, who died in 1649. In 1632, he received the concession for the construction of the Silberegg smelter and in 1641 rose to the Carinthian provincial estates. His daughter married Baron Christoph Andreas von Gaisruck († 1668). From the last owner of this name, the mine owner Max Thaddäus von Egger took over the property including the smelter in the second half of the 19th century. After that, the owners of the manor changed rapidly, until in 1930 the Gegenbauer family became the owners of the castle and owned it until the last quarter of the 20th century.
In 1996, during extensive restoration, an attempt was made to restore the castle to its original appearance, including the restoration of the historical color scheme. In addition to several apartments, the castle also houses an inn.
Description+
Silberegg Castle is located south of the village center at the junction of Kappeler Straße (L94) and Silberegger Straße (L82). It is a three-winged, three-story building that encloses a square inner courtyard. At the corners of the building were four slender, square towers with pointed spires, which, however, do not protrude above the hip roof of the main building. Two of the towers were replaced in the 19th century, along with the high wall with a gate on the north side, by a two-story wing. At the same time, the northwest tower was raised and has since served as a clock tower. The facades from 1870 have a simple structure: cordon cornices, profiled main cornice, and simple window frames (plaster fascias). On the southwest side is the Renaissance marble portal with a profiled jamb and a horizontal top over pilasters, with capitals of acanthus leaves.
Inside the castle, on the ground floor, there is a continuous transverse arcade with a barrel vault and lunettes, above it a hall with a baroque stucco ceiling and an 18th-century stone floor laid in a checkerboard pattern.
Next to the main building is a group of outbuildings, which housed a brewery that was shut down in 1929.
