Silberegg Castle

The origins of settlement in Silberegg date back to Roman times, evidenced by archaeological finds indicating earlier silver deposits. In the Middle Ages, a castle existed here, first mentioned in 1274, though its exact location is unknown today. The current castle was built at the beginning of the 15th century. Hans von Silberegg, who died in 1543, is known as the first confirmed owner. After him, ownership changed through marriage and sale, including to the families von Schönaich and von Windischgrätz. In 1629, Georg Siegmund von Althofen acquired the estate; he received a concession in 1632 to establish the Silberegg smelter and rose to the Carinthian provincial estates in 1641.
