Sitzendorf Castle

The origins of the current castle lie in a 13th-century fortress, encircled by a 25-meter-wide moat. In 1463, Emperor Frederick III conquered this complex. From 1492 until 1504, the castle was owned by Hanns von Wulfestorff. Due to dilapidation, the old castle was demolished in 1745. A new castle construction began in 1765, incorporating parts of the former outer bailey structures; however, only one-third of the planned project was realized. Until 1876, the castle changed owners several times, most recently belonging to the Dietrichstein family. Following the Imperial Public School Act of 1869, which extended compulsory schooling, the municipality needed larger premises. It acquired the vacant castle to establish a primary school, which moved in in 1876.
