Sövdeborg Castle

To be privately owned

Sövdeborg Castle, a historic complex in the Swedish region of Skåne, presents itself as a striking edifice on the shores of Lake Sövdeborgssjön. Its architecture, characterized by a main building with two wings and a round tower, tells of a eventful past, ranging from Danish rule to Swedish nobility.

History+

The origins of Sövdeborg date back to around 1180, when a farm called Sygostha or Sygastha, corresponding to the present estate, was the scene of an attack on Bishop Absalon of Lund. After the Reformation, Sövdeborg fell to the Danish Crown, which sold it to Fredrik Lange in 1587. Lange initiated the construction of the current castle on Lake Sövdeborgssjön in 1597, with the eastern and southern parts of the building and the tower being erected. In 1639, Otto Tott extended the complex with another wing. After Skåne became Swedish in 1682, Field Marshal Rutger von Ascheberg acquired the estate. In the following centuries, the castle changed hands several times and was owned by notable noble families such as Sparre and Piper. Between 1840 and 1844, the facade received a Neo-Romanesque design with medieval elements.
