Sofiero Castle

Sofiero Castle, a historic summer residence, is north of Helsingborg in the southern Swedish region of Skåne and is now known for its rhododendron collection.
History+
The origins of Sofiero Castle date back to 1864, when it was built as a summer residence for Crown Prince Oscar and his wife Sophia of Nassau. Initially a single-story building, it acquired its current form between 1874 and 1876. In 1905, the later King Oscar II gifted the castle to his grandson Prince Gustav Adolf on the occasion of his wedding. Gustav Adolf and his first wife Margarete were instrumental in designing the present-day garden. In 1907, they laid the foundation for the rhododendron collection, which is now unique in Europe, comprising around 10,000 plants of 300 species. After Gustav Adolf's death in 1973, Sofiero became the property of the municipality of Helsingborg.
