On a ridge in Stuttgart-West is Schloss Solitude, a Rococo palace. Built in the 18th century as a hunting and representative palace, it is today a center for artistic development.

History+

Schloss Solitude was constructed between 1763 and 1769 under Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg. Architects Johann Friedrich Weyhing and Philippe de La Guêpière oversaw the building of this hunting and representative palace. The construction period was marked by financial difficulties, as the costs exceeded the duchy's means, leading to political conflicts. In 1770, the Karlsschule, an elite school whose most famous student was Friedrich Schiller, was founded here. The school moved to Stuttgart in 1775, and the court's residence at Solitude was discontinued. After a long period of decay and significant damage, particularly to the ceiling paintings, the palace underwent extensive renovation from 1972 to 1983.
