Sommerschenburg Castle

The first documented mention of the settlement of Sommerschenburg, which housed workers of the castle, dates back to 983. In 1056, the castle was owned by Lothar von Walbeck before passing to the Counts of Summersenburg in 1088. After its destruction in 1192, the complex was rebuilt. In 1208, ownership transferred to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, and during the Thirty Years' War, the castle was again destroyed in 1626 and subsequently rebuilt. From 1680, it belonged to Brandenburg and served as an electoral domain and administrative seat. By order of Frederick II, houses for colonists were built in 1770. In 1807, the estate passed to Jean Marie René Savary, Duke of Rovigo.
