Sommerswalde Palace, an estate in the Schwante Forest near Schwante, now serves as a meditation center. The complex, built in the late 19th century, is characterized by its symmetrical architecture and its connection to Berlin landmarks.

History+

The construction of Sommerswalde Palace took place between 1888 and 1891, commissioned by Lieutenant (ret.) Friedrich August Richard Sommer. He was the heir of the Berlin master carpenter Carl August Heinrich Sommer, who owned real estate near the Brandenburg Gate. Richard Sommer sold the inherited houses and used the proceeds to finance the construction of the palace and its associated estate. The design of the palace, particularly its original dome, showed allusions to Paul Wallot's first design for the Reichstag building. After Sommer's death in 1916, the estate was divided; the lands went to an agricultural cooperative, while the lawyer Erich Lübbert acquired and renovated the palace complex as a family residence. After World War II, the Soviet military administration used the palace before it became the FDJ School Alexej Meressjew in 1949.
