Sondermühlen Castle

The origins of the Sondermühlen estate are not entirely clear, but a first documented mention is said to date from 1350, when Hermann Wulf and Nikolaus von Gesmele were enfeoffed with farms, houses, and the “mill in Nordenfelde”. In the 15th century, the feudal lords changed, including Johann and Lubbert von Arnholte as well as Johann von Vincke. A turning point was the year 1479, when Knight Ebbeke von Vincke consolidated various family possessions. After two further generations of the Vincke family, the von Nehem family took over the estate in 1558 and held it for seven generations until 1778.
