History+
The town of Sondershausen was first mentioned in a document in 1125. A castle at this location was first noted in 1287 and passed into the possession of the Counts of Schwarzburg in 1356. Around 1300, a residential tower was built, the remains of which are still visible today as the castle tower. Count Günther XL. began constructing a Renaissance castle from 1534, taking inspiration from the Saxon court in Torgau. In the 18th century, the late Baroque west wing was added, and in 1770/71, the castle fountain with a Hercules statue was installed.
